Free State
The Free State borders the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, North-West, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng Provinces, and also shares a border with Lesotho. Although it is the third largest province, it has the second smallest population, as it consists largely of the plains of the Southern African plateau ranging between 1000m and 1500m. It is a rural province with wide horizons, farmland, mountains, goldfields and widely dispersed towns. The Orange River forms the southern boundary of the Free State and includes the Gariep and Vanderkloof Dams, which are the largest dams in the country. The northern Free State is drained by smaller rivers which are extensively utilised for irrigation.
